Moles are not popular with garden and lawn owners. Although they are beneficial animals as they feed on insects, their mounds destroy and disfigure the lawn. Furthermore, underground tunnels damage the roots of grass and ornamental plants on the plot. Therefore, many people are looking for an effective way to get rid of a mole.

how to get rid of a mole

Anyone who has tried to remove a mole on their own knows that it is no easy task. It requires not only great determination and patience, but also specialist knowledge. The time spent fighting the mole pest is often disproportionate to the results we want to achieve, not to mention the damage caused to the garden. Moreover, home methods often prove ineffective or bring only short-term improvement. In the case of a persistent problem, it is worth considering professional control methods.

Mole control method

The European mole (Talpa Europaea) is under partial species protection in Poland. However, this does not cover individuals located in private gardens, crops, nurseries or sports facilities.

One of the professional and effective methods is fumigation, i.e. gassing. This treatment can only be performed by persons with special permits. Special chemicals called fumigants are used to fight moles, which are not available for sale to unauthorised persons. These are gases that, under the right conditions, are safe for the environment and neutral above the lawn surface, but lethal to the mole in its underground tunnels.

Garden fumigation treatment

Getting rid of the pest from the garden is possible when the temperature at night is above 5°C, but the best effectiveness is achieved at soil temperatures above 10°C. Usually, before performing the treatment, a specialist conducts a detailed reconnaissance of the area to assess the situation and plan further actions.

Mole control using this method usually takes a day or two, but can take up to several days. The duration depends on the season, humidity and the ambient and soil temperature. As a rule, the higher the temperature and humidity, the faster the applied chemicals work. The effectiveness of a correctly performed treatment is very high.
