The first feed of the year: early spring lawn feed

The first job after winter is to clear the lawn of organic debris such as leaves and twigs. Later, once the grass has started to grow, you can give it its first cut of the season – ideally in late March or early April. This is also the right moment for the first lawn feed of the year. What should you feed your lawn with after the first cut? Reach for Early Spring Lawn Feed – Quick Recovery – Mr. Green Grass®. Its main nutrient is nitrogen, which stimulates growth, but this nitrogen-rich lawn fertiliser is also enriched with other macro- and micronutrients – phosphorus, potassium and magnesium – to help your turf recover quickly after the winter months. Water the lawn thoroughly straight after spreading. This first feed keeps releasing nutrients for around 8 weeks. So what should you feed your lawn with as spring goes on?

Spring lawn feed: intensive growth

The next spring feed should go on between the end of May and the beginning of July – depending, of course, on when you applied the first one. By now the grass should be in good shape after winter, with tougher blades, so it doesn’t need quite as many nutrients as it did at the start. That’s why Spring Lawn Feed – Intensive Growth – Mr. Green Grass® is formulated for vigorous growth and a thicker, denser sward, combining nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. As usual, water the lawn after feeding – or apply the fertiliser before rain so it soaks down into the soil. Like the early spring feed, spring lawn feed works for around 8 weeks.

Summer lawn feed: complete protection

Summer is in full swing! In the summer months the priority is protecting and regenerating the lawn rather than pushing growth. That’s exactly what we designed Summer Lawn Feed – Complete Protection – Mr. Green Grass® for. It helps the grass cope with high temperatures and recover quickly after a dry spell. The best time for summer lawn feed is July or August, when the turf is most at risk of drying out. Apply the feed to short, freshly cut grass – ideally two days after mowing – and feed early in the morning or in the evening, when temperatures are lower. And don’t forget the essential final step: water it in!

Autumn and winter lawn feed

The final stage of the feeding year is preparing the lawn for winter – in other words, building up its resistance to frost. We’ve created a special blend for this: Autumn Lawn Feed – Winter Survival – Mr. Green Grass®. This autumn feed is very low in nitrogen; its main nutrients are phosphorus and potassium (potash). These macronutrients are particularly good for grass: they strengthen the root system and harden the blades against cold and disease. Apply autumn lawn feed between September and October, a few days after mowing and once fallen leaves have been cleared. A proper autumn and winter lawn feed protects the grass right through the winter.

Special agents for special jobs

Mr. Green Grass offers not only seasonal lawn feeds but also blends designed for specific tasks. How to feed your lawn

Getting the feed right matters, but even the best lawn feed won’t work properly if the granules are spread the wrong way.

Use a lawn feed spreader, not your hands

First and most important: spread the feed evenly across the whole lawn. That’s why lawn fertiliser should be applied with a lawn feed spreader rather than scattered by hand. Uneven spreading can leave you with stripes – over-fed grass in some places and grass the fertiliser never reached in others. Only an even application makes feeding effective. Don’t guess the amount, either: work out the correct dose from the application rate given on the pack.

When to feed your lawn

The best results come from feeding on an overcast day when rain is forecast. Moistened granules move down into the soil and reach the grass roots. Spread the feed onto dry blades, though, so the granules don’t stick to the grass but wash down into the ground with the water. Avoid feeding in strong sunshine – fertiliser spread in full sun can scorch the grass.
