Symptoms of acidification

The condition of the soil, and consequently the grass and other plants, is influenced by many elements. Adequate sunlight and hydration, air humidity, as well as regular weeding and fertilising are well-known factors. However, not everyone is aware that maintaining the correct pH level is the key for plants to grow correctly.

Incorrectly identified and disrupted acidity makes the grass grow weak, pale, and patchy. As a result, it is more susceptible to weeds and diseases. Furthermore, on a lawn with excessively high acidity, moss and other weeds thrive, particularly field horsetail.

pH level should be between 5.5 and 7.5, and its ideal value is 6.5. To adjust acidity, special pH balancers – uptake improvement – Mr. Green Grass® are used. Fertilising should only be carried out if the pH falls below the 5.5 level.

Adjusting the soil reaction is also known as liming. If you need more information on this subject, read our article on liming the lawn!

How to check the pH level?

Before applying lawn feed, you should check whether your lawn requires deacidification. You can approach this in several ways. The simplest measuring tool is a soil pH test strip. The colour of the paper, previously dipped in a solution of soil and distilled water, is compared with the scale included with the product, and the pH level is determined on this basis. Unfortunately, there is a risk that the colour will be read incorrectly.

A measurement made using a Hellig liquid pH tester looks similar. This kit consists of a ceramic plate with a depression for the soil sample and a printed colour scale. Simply place the soil in the depression, pour over the liquid and wait for the liquid to change colour.

The pH measurement can also be carried out using an electronic pH meter. This is the simplest of the available methods. Simply push the meter probe into the soil, and after a moment, the numerical measurement result will appear on the device’s display.

If you want to obtain full information about the condition of your lawn, it is worth opting for a comprehensive soil test. You can perform this using our sampling kit. District Chemical and Agricultural Stations also offer paid soil sample testing for fertiliser advice.

Application

pH Balancer – Uptake Improvement – Mr. Green Grass® is used to raise soil pH and improve the uptake of nutrients from fertilisers by the lawn. Apply once a year from September to May, even in winter.

Spread evenly using a rotary spreader over a dry, leaf-free lawn at a rate of 5 kg per 100 m² (50 g/m²). Warning: Never spread the product by hand, as this will result in uneven distribution of granules.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to apply the pH Balancer – Uptake Improvement – Mr. Green Grass® so that plants can fully utilise other fertilisers?

You will achieve the best results by using the product from early spring to autumn, whenever testing shows a soil pH below 5.5. The key goal of liming is better uptake of nutrients, ensuring the potassium and phosphorus contained in other fertilisers work much more effectively. It is advisable to carry out the treatment 2-3 days after mowing, which helps the granules reach the soil and root zone directly.

What weather conditions are optimal for carrying out the liming treatment?

The pH Balancer – Uptake Improvement – Mr. Green Grass® is best applied during calm weather, which guarantees a precise and even distribution of the granules using a rotary spreader. After spreading the product, it is essential to water the lawn generously to activate the calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate within the soil structure. Avoid applying the product to frozen ground or during extreme heat if you are unable to provide immediate and heavy irrigation to the turf.

Can I use pH Balancer – Uptake Improvement – Mr. Green Grass® at the same time as nitrogen fertilisers?

We recommend leaving a gap of at least two weeks between using the pH Balancer – Uptake Improvement – Mr. Green Grass® and applying fertilisers with a high nitrogen content to avoid undesirable chemical reactions. Liming is best carried out as a separate recovery step, which will prepare the soil to receive subsequent Mr. Green Grass® care steps. This will help you avoid the loss of valuable elements and maximise the positive impact of both products on the condition of your garden.

How often should I check the soil pH and repeat the application?

It is worth measuring the pH at least once a year, using an electronic meter or a professional Mr. Green Grass® gouge auger – soil sampler probe. The fertiliser should only be applied if the result falls below the ideal value of 6.5, which signals increasing soil acidification. Maintaining the pH within the optimal range of 5.5–7.5 prevents turf degeneration and effectively limits the growth of nuisance weeds, such as field horsetail.

Does pH Balancer – Uptake Improvement – Mr. Green Grass® help in reducing pests and larvae in the lawn?

Properly adjusted soil pH creates an environment unfavourable for the development of many pest larvae, which prefer acidic and compacted soil. By improving soil structure and stimulating microbial life, the product supports the natural defence mechanisms of the turf. It is an effective, eco-friendly method of prevention, which serves as an excellent complement to professional lawn care throughout the growing season.
